This is fascinating I love the Astro Hungarian monarchy. I don't think Rudolf was assassinated though (by a third party) even if I'm a commoner from Manchester. I have a lot of love for Rudolf 1889. I'm sure the emporer Karl was honerable too. A short reign and it 's good to hear from this Rudolf, all these details you don't read about in books.

Lotta h8 in the comment, i for 1 appreciated this talk. The pace is a bit slow, but that's ok. I like talks that challenge the historical orthodoxy about things like the hapsburg empire of Austria Hungary. History is many things but it is rarely boring and obvious, especially applied to such a strange and complex entity as AH

The movie is one of my few all time (I'm 82, a 23 year US Army veteran) favorites. To me is seems simple, spare, clean. I was in the relatively small US Special Forces for a while and have good memories of the elite training and comradery, so that could be part of why I like the movie, but the deeper side of the movie I see is non-sexual jealousy - yes, even in a tough Foreign Legion sergeant. Then the release of revenge, and a dance, and in bed with a gun. Surprisingly unusual 💪

The Legion dissing her MADE that movie, it would've looked like "Black Hawk Down" otherwise, w/ hundreds of men, choppers, and armor. A lesser director might've pulled the plug on it right there but instead she took what she had and made it a stripped down, expressionist poem (This woman has been Assist Director on a PILE of films, she knows her craft). I'd love to know where their fears of gayness came from. The Billy Budd opera was written by two gay men but how could the Legion have been privy to that? The music from the opera is in the movie and it's totally hypnotic even if the disco number steals the show. Billy Budd itself is not "gay" but as Camille Paglia brilliantly points out in "Sexual Personae" there are tons of homoerotic undercurrents in Melville. Budd is a kind of homoerotic idol, probably based on Antinous, whose statue Melville was entranced by. If you've read Mann's "Death in Venice," Billy Budd is basically Tadzio as sailor - the silent archetype of Beautiful Boy who creates a hierarchical circle of unspoken man-love, Spartan man-love around him, but to the chagrin of a jealous foe. You can't "teach" this stuff in film class and she's acknowledged she only gets away with it because she operates outside the studio system, that tends to be your so-called "auteurs" comfort space, although directors can improv things into their movies that become iconic. Ted Levine's Buffalo Bill dance in "Silence of the Lambs" was unscripted; he had to loosen up w/ shots of tequila if I remember and Demme used music from a cassette given to him by an unknown musician driving his cab! These two dance scenes are eerily kissing cousins, as Bill sashaying to "Goodbye Horses" is his transformative moment same as the sergeant seems to transcend his death with his dance.

"He suppressed houses of ill-repute. He dismissed a minister of the Empire because he (took a bribe) for a commission for a contract for new Howitzers. He disbanded a cartel of press (priests?) led by a Freemason. He developed laws for the protection of minors and laws against vulgar literature. He proposed to the episcopate (bishops), unfortunately in vain, the building of makeshift churches in neighborhoods in Vienna that were crowded with workers, and for missions throughout the monarchy." ^Here's how you do the most for your country in your short life and make enemies of the wicked in high places.

It is unfortunate that the director of mobiles was afraid to show the truth and the consequences of the flight coup, which caused very great material and moral damage, primarily to those residents, namely non-citizens of Latvia or Aliens of Latvia, who after 1991 lost their citizenship, social and economic rights. And with the entry of Latvia into the European Union, they were deprived of the right to legally work and live like many Europeans. There are 400,000 non-citizens or ALIENS OF LATVIA living in Latvia and Estonia. A wellfed director from Switzerland cannot understand this when people live for 30 years without documents and whose citizenship they were deprived of in 1991.

I wish that more critics were able to say something else about Bela tarr than, '' this will be hard and patience will be tested''. Pretty much saying that they have little to say while posing with the film... Think a lot more would be able to watch his films if one tried to give entrance points to people rather than daring them to watch it.

TO ALL THOSE WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED A POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE EXPLANATION OF THE 1914 SARAJEVO ASASSINATION THROUGH AN ACCIDENTAL LINGUISTIC MISUNDERSTANDING - doprava / pravo someone once said that history is too serious a science to be left just to historians I herewith wish to humbly submit my contribution as a LINGUIST namely, my idea is that the 1914 SA assassination may have been caused by an accidental linguistic misunderstanding - the CZECH word ''doprava'' <<go to the RIGHT / turn RIGHT >> and the local word (call it as you wish: Serbo-Croatian, koiné neo-štokavian, or just South(ern) Slav of the Eastern standard, Bosnia included) ''PRAVO'' << idite PRAVO / produžite PRAVO = ravno >> meaning GO STRAIGHT the Czech driver, a stranger to the city, probably got confused as he approached the bridge and (maybe upon asking) might have been instructed (orally by a local, traveling in the same vehicle or maybe by a not far-away local passer-by) or pre-instructed (again, orally by some local official who was in charge of charting the route) and was eventually made to understand that at that particular bridge he was supposed to TURN RIGHT instead od CONTINUING STRAIGHT ... this incidental stop was, as we all know, fatal please bear in mind that I am from THIS country and also that I am a trained linguist (got my M.A. degree) and multilingual, which includes Czech a similar misunderstanding happened to my as I once drove in the Moravian City of Olomouc and asked, stopping at the lights, the driver who was in the vehicle next to mine, how I could get to the railway station ... he told me ''jděte doprava'' which I instinctively understood (in my native language) as ''idite pravo'' - ''procede straight'' whereas I should have turned to the right ... the cultured Czech drivers were kind enough to NOT make any mass of it because losing a few second of the right-arrow signal ... LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR COMMENTS Željko Novačić / ZELJKO NOVACIC on FB or mail to zenova@net.hr
